Culture hero - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

culture hero is a mythological hero specific to some group (culturalethnicreligious, etc.) who changes the world through invention ordiscovery. A typical culture hero might be credited as the discoverer of fire, or agriculturesongstraditionlaw or religion, and is usually the most important legendary figure of a people, sometimes as the founder of its ruling dynasty.

In some cultures, there are dualistic myths, featuring two culture heroes arranging the world in a complementary manner. Dualistic cosmologiesare present in all inhabited continents[1] and show great diversity: they may feature culture heroes, but also demiurges (exemplifying dualisticcreation myths in the latter case), or other beings; the two heroes may compete or collaborate; they may be conceived as neutral or contrasted as good versus evil; be of the same importance or distinguished as powerful versus weak; be brothers (even twins) or be not relatives at all.[2]

In many cultures, particularly, the mythical figure of the trickster and the culture hero are combined. To illustrate, Prometheus, in Greek mythology, stole fire from the gods to give it to humans.

In many Native American mythologies and beliefs, the coyote spirit stole fire from the gods (or stars or sun) and is more of a trickster than a culture hero.

The Grand Canyon Uranium Rush - NYTimes.com

section9:

In July 2009, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar imposed a two-year halt to uranium exploration and mining on one million acres around the Grand Canyon. The moratorium was a much-needed timeout to a rush of prospecting claims near the canyon, most of them by Canadian and British companies. The rush was fueled by two things: an increase in uranium prices and the wide-open exploitation allowed on public lands by the harmful, antiquated 1872 mining law.

The Interior Department has now prepared four possible alternatives for how to proceed. The public has another 30 days to comment. The only sensible alternative is the most sweeping one: withdrawing one million acres around the Grand Canyon from mining and prospecting for the next 20 years.

Restricting mining in this area would have little effect on America’s uranium supply, a vast majority of which comes from Wyoming and New Mexico.

Setting that land off-limits would protect the delicate ecosystem in and around the Grand Canyon. It would also eliminate the risk of radioactive materials, disturbed by mining, leaching into the aquifer and the Colorado River. That would affect the Havasupai Indians, who live in the canyon itself, and 27 million people who draw water from the river in Nevada and California.

The radiation fears seem a little silly to me. More 99% of the Uranium found naturally in the Earth is U238 and is actually pretty safe stuff. The remaining <1% is U235 and that can actually be used for fission.

That being said though, there isn’t a particularly good reason to disturb one of the most treasured places in the United States for this project. There isn’t anything that could ever be worth the damage that would be done.

Not to date, no. We have talked about it, and it may happen one day, but neither of us feel the need. Not quite sure what all the fuss is about!

Smash the White Supremacist Capitalist Patriarchy: grammar policing and derailing

Grammar policing is one of the nastiest and most privileged forms of derailing I’ve come into contact with. When you nitpick a person’s argument because of formatting, grammar, or spelling errors, rather than examining the actual intent and objective worth of what they are saying,…
